Spinal Reset
Neural Unlocking
The Problem Isn’t in Your Back
You don’t have a weak back. You have a back your brain has forgotten.
Hours of sitting create arthrogenic muscle inhibition: a neurological blockade where the brain no longer controls the deep stabilisation muscles (Multifidus). The superficial muscles compensate, become overloaded, and you experience pain. Physiotherapy trains the surface; we restore the wiring.
This protocol is simultaneously a back treatment and a cognitive intervention. The same spinal noise that blocks your back also blocks your prefrontal cortex. Research shows that spinal stimulation reduces the N30 peak — a measure of sensorimotor noise in the decision-making centre — by 20%.
Clinical Note: This is the most accessible protocol we offer. 45 minutes, no preparation, immediate results. It’s also the ideal first encounter with NEST for those not yet ready for a full Tri-Phasic programme.
The Protocol (45 min)
Phase 1: Spinal Decompression (ReLounge)
30 Minutes | EMS + TENS + Heat You recline on the ReLounge in zero-gravity position. The anti-gravity posture eliminates spinal compression. Three modalities work simultaneously:
- EMS (12-channel stimulation mat): Activates the Multifidus directly, bypassing the neurological blockade. The deep stabilisers contract passively — your brain doesn’t need to do anything. Research shows significantly improved pain threshold, ROM and postural stability after a single session.
- TENS: Blocks pain signals via the Gate Control mechanism. Aβ fibres inhibit nociceptive transmission in the spinal cord. The pain memory is directly reset.
- Hyperthermia (40°C): Ceramic deep heat increases local blood flow by up to 300% and induces fascial thixotropy — the stiff connective tissue becomes fluid and supple, allowing EMS impulses to penetrate deeper.
Phase 2: Neural Anchoring (Optic Flow)
15 Minutes | Sanctuary We don’t send you straight to the car. The spinal reset must be anchored in the nervous system.
- Protocol: A guided walk in De Deelen with a specific instruction: panoramic scanning of the horizon during forward movement.
- Mechanism: Lateral eye movements activate the frontoparietal network and transiently deactivate the amygdala (de Voogd et al., J Neuroscience 2018). This anchors the cortical calm the ReLounge has created and prevents stress from undoing the reset on the way back.
Pharmacological Support (Take-Home)
- FjoerGoud (Curcumin/Ginger): Single dose as a natural anti-inflammatory to support the local recovery process overnight.
Who This Is For
This protocol is designed for three profiles:
- The Executive who sits 8+ hours daily and notices that concentration and back pain worsen together.
- The Curious who wants to experience NEST without committing to a full Tri-Phasic programme.
- The Returner who wants to periodically repeat the spinal component as maintenance after a retreat.
The Path Forward
After the Spinal Reset, you’ll have direct experience of how your body functions when the neurological blockade is lifted. Many guests find the cognitive effect (clearer thinking, less decision fatigue) surprises them — the back wasn’t the only problem. This is the starting point for a conversation about the full Prefrontal Oxygenation protocol, where we combine the same spinal reset with hyperbaric oxygen therapy for a deeper and longer-lasting effect.
Clinical Mechanism
Breaking arthrogenic muscle inhibition via EMS activation of the Multifidus, combined with N30 peak reduction in the prefrontal cortex and amygdala deactivation via Optic Flow.
