An activation deficit of the deep stabilising back muscle (multifidus) is an underlying mechanism behind the recurrence of low back pain.
Motor control and stabilisation exercises reduce pain and disability in chronic low back pain more than general exercises or minimal intervention.
Static sitting raises the pressure on the lumbar intervertebral disc, which can lead to dehydration and a decrease in disc height.
The intervertebral discs swell overnight as they take up water under low load; the disc is taller, stiffer in compression and more vulnerable in bending in the morning — with clinical significance for early-morning loading.
