01 // The Origin Story

The Contradiction

At 44, I appear to be the textbook example of success. Self-made, financially independent and physically in the shape of my life as a Hyrox Pro athlete. But this is not the result of “working harder”. That dogma nearly killed me.

Mathijs Dijkstra Sled Pull HyroxResistance Training: Physical stress to build mental resilience.

The System Failure

For years, adrenaline was my only fuel. I lived under the assumption that the grind was the only path to the top. I built companies, worked 80 hours a week in logistics, and ignored every signal from my body. Sleep was for the weak. Rest was lost revenue.

My brain, programmed for instant gratification and short-term dopamine, constantly sought the path of least resistance to numb the stress. It started euphorically, but ended destructively. I chased the highs in nightlife to forget the lows of business. It was not a celebration; it was anaesthesia.

I crashed. Hard. On a Saturday morning in 2009, shivering in a clinic, I realised that my “success formula” was a lie. I was not building; I was demolishing. My HPA-as (stress system) was completely dysregulated. The ROI on my lifestyle was zero.

The Reconstruction

The conventional route offered “talking sessions”. But you cannot solve a physiological problem with psychology alone. When your mitochondria are depleted, talking does not help. I began treating my body like a business: Data-driven restructuring.

I immersed myself in physiology. I discovered that recovery is not a passive state, but an active discipline. I replaced the destructive dopamine hits with hormetic stimuli: extreme cold, heat, hypoxia and heavy physical loading.

The Metamorphosis

From a body that screamed for numbing, to a machine that thrives under pressure. By hacking my biology, I reclaimed my executive capacity. The brain fog is gone. Decision-making is sharp. The anhedonia (the inability to experience pleasure) has disappeared.

Mathijs Dijkstra Wall Balls

Why NEST?

NEST is the place I needed when I hit the wall.

I did not build this place as a “B&B”. I built it as a Performance Sanctuary. Here you will find no vague promises, but the tools that saved me:

  • Hyperbaric Oxygen (HBOT): For the recovery of cognitive damage.
  • Ice Baths & Sauna: For vascular flexibility and mental control.
  • Nature: For lowering cortisol. I am not a guru. I am a subject-matter expert who cracked the code. And that code I now share with you.
